What exactly is cart abandonment? Essentially, cart abandonment is the end result of online shoppers who goes through most of the checkout process on a website (searching items, selecting items, adding items to the cart), but not completing the checkout with payment and purchase.
According to comScore, online shopping carts are hitting 67% abandonment before purchases are made. However, if the right methods are applied with the design of websites, reducing cart abandonment can be successfully achieved.
• Offer Multiple Payment Options
By offering multiple payment options, more people will be able to follow through with purchases, using their desired method of payment. Offering flexible payment options creates additional sales for business owners and works well for reducing cart abandonment.
• Design for Mobile
People nowadays want the convenience of being able to purchase items on the fly, from wherever they are. When it comes to methods for reducing cart abandonment, designing websites for effective, user-friendly mobile access is the way to go for meeting today’s consumers’ wants and expectations.
• Offer Free Shipping
Cart abandonment can result from consumers not wanting to pay high shipping costs, on top of the cost of their items. If profit margins permit, offering free shipping can be a great way to entice consumers to complete their purchases.
• Keep the Checkout Process Simple
Keeping the checkout process simple will prevent unnecessary frustration for potential buyers. The checkout process on websites should include no more than 3 to 5 steps, from beginning to end, ideally on a single page, or two pages.
• Optimize Site Loading
Consumers want to be able to search and purchase their items in a timely fashion. Websites should load quickly, (between 2 to 3 seconds, maximum), in order to avoid cart abandonment.
